A member of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), Dr. Ramani has served on Hannover City Council since 2021. His election marks an important milestone in his journey from India to public leadership in Germany.

From Tamil Nadu to Civic Leadership in Germany

Born in Tamil Nadu, South India, Dr. Bala Ramani moved to Hannover in 2000 and has called the city his home for more than 25 years.

A trained marine biologist, he has established himself as an active voice in local politics, advocating for social cohesion, diversity, equal opportunities and an inclusive, internationally welcoming Hannover.

A Prestigious Role Representing Hannover

Hannover has three honorary mayors alongside its Lord Mayor (Oberbürgermeister), Belit Onay.

The honorary mayors are elected by the City Council and also undertake representative duties on behalf of the Lord Mayor.
