Starting 1 January 2026, India Assumes the Leadership of BRICS, Marking a Historic First in the Expanded Format

Starting 1 January 2026, India has assumed the leadership of BRICS from Brazil. This is a historic milestone, as it marks the first time India is presiding over BRICS in its expanded format, now comprising 10 full members — Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia.

India will host the 18th BRICS Summit later in 2026. Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, India’s presidency will follow a people-centric approach, with a strong focus on supporting developing countries through advanced technologies, enhanced digital access, and fairer international systems.

The overarching aim is to amplify the voice of emerging and smaller nations and promote a more inclusive, balanced, and representative global order.
