The UK reached a new daily Covid-19 infection record on Thursday, In the last 24 hours, 119,789 instances were reported, a day after the number of illnesses surpassed 100,000 for the first time at 106,122.
In the week ending December 16, the Office for National Statistics projected that approximately 1.4 million people in UK homes have Covid, the highest figure ever for the pandemic, which began in early 2020. Hospitalizations are also increasing, though at a slower pace than in prior rounds, especially in London.
Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of England, has decided not to impose stricter restrictions ahead of Christmas, instead focusing on a push to strengthen vaccine protection through a booster programme. More than 30 million individuals in the UK have got booster shots, with Johnson aiming to give one to everyone over the age of 18 by the end of the year. Other parts of the UK have tightened anti-virus procedures, and Scotland stated on Thursday that nightclubs will be closed starting next week, including on New Year’s Eve, due to the increase in cases
The Scottish government announced that clubs would be forced to close at 5 a.m. on Monday “to combat the transmission of Omicron, which is spreading rapidly.”
Edinburgh has already cancelled its annual magnificent fireworks display for Hogmanay, Scotland’s New Year’s Eve.
