Italy India Partnership Accelerates Innovation Trade and Strategic Cooperation

INNOVATION & TECHNOLOGY
A productive interaction between Antonio Tajani and Piyush Goyal with 30 unicorn founders highlighted the growing strength of the Italy–India innovation ecosystem. Plans are underway for a dedicated Italy–India Innovation Centre in India, enabling structured dialogue among startups, companies, universities, and research clusters, and promoting skills and talent mobility along with joint projects in AI, quantum, digital, biotech, and other frontier sectors. A dedicated startups and innovation meet in Rome in 2026 was also discussed.

ECONOMY, TRADE & INVESTMENTS
The 3rd Italy–India Business Forum this year (after Delhi and Brescia) brought together 200 Italian and Indian companies in Mumbai, featuring B2B meetings, pitching sessions, field visits, and sectoral discussions in automotive components, agrifood, waste-to-energy, and sports technology. With a shared target of €20 billion in trade by 2029, key milestones included an MoU between SIMEST and India Investment and Trade Promotion Organisation, alongside major corporate agreements—such as Prada partnering with Indian artisans for Kolhapuri chappals, Danieli securing €500 million contracts, and new ventures in retail and gas valves. Ministers also signed the minutes of the Joint Strategic Economic Committee to advance cooperation in advanced machinery, precision agriculture, recycling, new technologies, defence, and more—Make in India + Made in Italy = Make together for the world.

FINANCE
A visit to National Stock Exchange of India launched dialogue among funds, venture capital, and financial stakeholders to further support innovation and growth.

SECURITY & DEFENCE
Both sides reaffirmed closer maritime security coordination in the Indo-Pacific, enhanced cooperation against terrorism, and commitments to joint ventures and co-production in defence equipment.

CONNECTIVITY
Ambition to fast-track implementation of India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) through closer logistics and port cooperation, including fast-track procedures to ease customs and tracking of goods.
