Germany reports a sharp uptake in new COVID-19 cases

The number of daily COVID-19 cases in Germany increased sharply with 8,324 new cases being reported within one day. This is 3,328 more than a week ago, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

In mid-May, the third wave of new infections exceeded 8,000. The situation calmed for a while but new infections have been increasing in Germany since the beginning July.

Recently, the country’s vaccination program has slowed significantly. Christian Drosten, Germany’s virologist, issued a stark warning to those who are not vaccinated. He stated that those who don’t get vaccinated could be infected as soon as this winter, according to the German Press Agency dpa.

In Germany, the incidence rate of COVID-19 cases reported in Germany over the last seven days has increased to 40.8 per 100,000 residents on Wednesday. This is an increase from 37.3 the previous day and 25.1 one week ago.
