Rukmini Vaderapura Puttaswamy / Garment Labour Union from Bangaluru receives the 17th Bremen Solidarity Award from Mayor of Bremen (20 June 2022)
Rukmini Vaderapura Puttaswamy, co-founder of the women’s initiative Marching Forward (Munnade) and the women-only Garment Labour Union from Bangaluru received the 17th Bremen Solidarity Award on 20 June 2022 from Dr. Andreas Bovenschulte, Mayor of Bremen, at a ceremony in the iconic Bremen Rathaus (City Hall), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Bremen Solidarity Prize, carries a prize money of € 10,000 and is awarded every two years by the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen to recognise and encourage people or initiatives that work to overcome injustice and the consequences of colonialism and racism as well as for democracy and human rights. Previous winners include the first winners, Winnie and Nelson Mandela (1988) and three from South Asia; Aung San Suu Kyi and Maung Thura from Myanmar (1994 & 2011) and Hetti Samanmali from Sri Lanka (1998).
Consul General congratulated Rukmini Vaderapura Puttaswamy on winning the prestigious Award and also thanked the City of Bremen for recognizing the valuable work being done by her.
