Omicron variant became the most dominant one in Portugal.

According to the national health office, Omicron has become the dominant coronavirus strain in Portugal, where more than 10,000 daily COVID-19 cases were reported on Saturday.

In the previous 24 hours, Portugal has registered 11 deaths and 12.943 new cases, which is a new high since January 29, 2021. The country was hit by a devastating wave of the pandemic earlier this year, which inundated the health system.

Portugal, which has one of the highest COVID-19 vaccination rates in the world, has begun immunising children above the age of five.

To address the increase in cases, Portugal has adopted a series of new measures to control the epidemic, including mandatory distance work, presentation of tests for participation in spectacles or sporting events, and the closure of bars and discos.

In order to limit interaction after the holidays, the administration declared on November 25 that the school holiday would be extended and that distance work would be required in the first week of January and the Portuguese government declared several health measures  early in December by extending brand use,  diagnostic tests and vaccination certificates.
