tax card & required documentations in Norway

Everyone who works in Norway must have a tax card. The tax card shows how much tax the employer must deduct before the salary is paid to you.

When you apply for a tax card, you must bring the following documentation:

Nordic citizens

– Passport or national ID card such as identity card, citizenship and gender, or valid driver’s license together with a printout from the population register in the country you moved from that shows citizenship and gender. The printout must not be older than 3 months and it must be signed and stamped.

– An employment contract, written work offer or documentation of Norwegian-registered business activities must be brought

EEA citizens

– Passport or valid ID card showing photo, citizenship and gender
– Employment contract, written work offer or documentation of Norwegian-registered business activities must be brought

Citizens outside the EEA

– Passport
– Employment contract, written work offer or documentation of Norwegian-registered business activities must be brought
– Documentation that you have a residence permit and the right to work in Norway

When you apply for a tax card for the first time, you must show up at one of the tax offices in the list below.

Alta, Bergen, Bodø, Drammen, Egersund, Førde, Gjøvik, Grimstad, Grålum, Hamar, Hammerfest, Harstad, Haugesund, Kirkenes, Kristiansand, Kristiansund, Leikanger, Leira, Leknes, Lillestrøm, Lyngdal, Mo i Rana, Molde, Namsos, Narvik, Nordfjordeid, Norheimsund, Oslo, Sandnessjøen, Sandvika, Skien, Sortland, Stavanger, Steinkjer, Svalbard, Tromsø, Trondheim, Tynset, Tønsberg, Ulstein, Vadsø, Ålesund

Service Center for Foreign Workers – Service Center for Foreign Workers:
Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim and Kirkenes

Your employer can also apply for a tax card electronically on your behalf before you show up at the tax office.

Electronic tax
card The tax authorities use electronic tax cards (e-tax cards). This means, among other things, that you do not receive tax cards on paper. You will instead receive a tax deduction notification. Your employer retrieves your tax card electronically.

Tax card for people with a Norwegian birth number
Most people who have a Norwegian birth number (personal number that begins with the date of birth) receive a tax card for next year automatically. If you do not receive the tax deduction message automatically, you must apply for a tax card.

Tax card for people with a D-number
Everyone who has a D-number must apply for a tax card every year.

Be aware of your own rules if you:
– are posted by a foreign employer
– work offshore for a Norwegian employer
– work as a seaman on a Norwegian-registered ship

Become an electronic user
As a general rule , the tax code must communicate with users digitally. As an electronic user, you get e.g. receive the tax return and tax settlement electronically and all your documents are stored on the Altinn portal.
