Information about Malta’s Residential Visa

Types of residency:

You can apply for one or more depending on the country you are emigrating to. “Two types” there are two types of residency: Permanent Residence and Ordinary Residence. The main difference between them all boils down ultimately to how much tax you pay.

Ordinary Residence

For EU citizens who are coming to Malta, Ordinary Residence is required. Based on your marital status and how much you earn, the tax you pay is calculated by subtracting a tax credit.

Permanent Residence

No matter where you are from, permanent residence is available to all. This is the right application for you if you are not from the EU. This scheme can be applied even if you’re not from the EU. However, we recommend that you always consult a lawyer to determine which scheme is best suited to your needs.

Your ordinary residence permit will need to be renewed every five years. Permanent residence permits can be renewed every year.
