When individuals are granted citizenship by investment, it is when they make an investment in real estate or government bonds. Citizenship by investment in Malta is only possible if the applicant makes multiple investments in the country. These investments can include a non-refundable direct investment, property investment and a philanthropic gift.

What should I know about Malta citizenship through investment changes?

The Maltese Exceptional investor Naturalization (MEIN) is a policy that allows for the expedited naturalization of Malta citizens. This policy allows eligible applicants and their qualifying relatives to attain Maltese citizenship through investments and a non-refundable payment in Malta.

This policy was launched in 2020 and should not be confused with the previous Individual Investor Programme. This is a new residence system that may lead to citizenship in the future.

Investment requirements to “MEIN”:

·      An investment that is direct and non-refundable

·      Property investment

·      Philanthropic donation

How to apply?

It takes between 12 and 36 months from the moment you submit your request for residence to the time that you receive citizenship.

You must follow these steps to apply for Malta’s MEIN.

  • Application for residence
  • Submission of an eligibility assessment (due diligence).
  • After payment of the application, CMA issues an Approval In Principle
  • Submitting for naturalization of exceptional services through direct investment (you must make these investments).
  • Followed by the Maltese passport, oath-swearing.
