Portugal covers almost everyone – provided they are legally present. Visitors who are short-term visitors to Portugal with Schengen Visas will need to be covered for up to EUR 37,000 in health insurance before they can enter the country. Portugal is covered under a reciprocal agreement on health between the EU and its members. Travelers and tourists visiting Portugal for less than 90 days will be able to access any Health Center that is available for general healthcare and tax-funded. These health care options are not the only ones available. It is important to have adequate healthcare coverage in order to be safe and receive proper care in an emergency

Portugal Golden Visa and Health Insurance Requirements

Applicants of the Portugal Golden Visa program who travel to Portugal prior to obtaining the Golden Visa are required to have travel insurance with recognized health cover during the entire duration of their stay in Portugal. This covers travel to Portugal to visit family members or for a biometric appointment.

After applicants have received their Golden Visa, they will be eligible for the Portugal National Health Service. To be eligible for the SNS’s services, applicants will need to register. Portugal Golden Visa holders can also buy private insurance.
