The Embassy solemnly commemorates the sacrifice of Lieutenant Colonel L.C.M. Bellamy at the Rome War Cemetery. As Commander of the 8/5th Mahratta Light Infantry Regiment, which he joined at Belgaum, India in 1941, he later led the unit through its conversion to the 4th Maratha Anti-Tank Regiment—now known as the 34th Field Regiment of the Indian Army. Lt. Col. Bellamy gave his life on July 27, 1944, during the Italian Campaign of World War II.
