After a gap of many years, the Republic Day of India was celebrated in Poland with colour and joy! The celebrations began with a performance open to the members of the public titled Taniec Pustyni or the dance of the desert by Shamla Kalbelia Sapera & troupe on 25th January 2023 at the prestigious Filharmonia Narodowa.
Ambassador Nagma M. Mallick addressing the audience, spoke on the significance of the Republic Day of India. She then gave a brief introduction to the Kalbelia dance performed by the traditional communities of the Thar desert in India. She expressed her happiness at the ongoing cultural cooperation between India and Poland and of the openness of the Polish people to Indian culture.
The full house at the Filharmonia Chamber Hall applauded the Kalbelia dance performed by dancers in characteristic costumes of long red and black skirts embroidered with mirrors, accompanied by the music of Rajasthan performed on traditional wind and percussion instruments. The ‘Kalbelia dance’, which was inscribed in 2010 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, is the celebrated dance of the traditional snake-charming tribes of the Thar desert of India.
