Honouring the Fallen: Commonwealth Remembrance Day in Berlin
Ambassador Ajit Gupte attended the Commonwealth Remembrance Day ceremony at Heerstraße War Cemetery in Berlin on 9 November 2025, paying homage to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during the Second World War.
The Heerstraße War Cemetery stands as a solemn reminder of the courage and devotion of 3,597 servicemen from various Allied forces, including 51 soldiers from India. These Indian soldiers, hailing from regiments such as the Rajputana Rifles, Mahratta Light Infantry, and Bombay Sappers, served with honour and dedication in distant lands, upholding the highest ideals of duty and sacrifice.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Gupte read out the Kohima Epitaph, immortalized in the memory of the soldiers who fell in the Battle of Kohima — one of the most defining moments of the war:
“When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, we gave our today.”
The event served as a poignant tribute to the valour of Indian soldiers whose legacy continues to inspire generations and reflects India’s enduring contribution to global peace and freedom.
