Diwali, the Festival of Lights, has been inscribed on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, marking a proud moment for India and the world.
The announcement was made during th e 20th Session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee, held at the iconic Red Fort, New Delhi, from 8–13 December 2025, in the presence of delegates from 194 Member States, international experts, and UNESCO’s global network.
With this inscription, Diwali becomes the 16th Indian elementto receive this prestigious recognition. Celebrated across generations, Diwali is a living tradition that strengthens social cohesion, fosters shared values, and contributes to sustainable development.
