Celebrating the Timeless Beauty of Madhubani Art

ODOP Series | Part 4 — Madhubani Art of Bihar

From the royal courts of King Janaka to the vibrant households of Mithila, Madhubani art stands as a shining symbol of Bihar’s cultural pride. Traditionally painted on mud walls during festivals and special rituals, this unique art form has now evolved onto canvas, paper, textiles, and home décor — all while preserving its ancient charm.

Each stroke in Madhubani tells a story — of mythology, nature, and everyday life — expressed through bold lines, geometric patterns, and natural colours made from plants, flowers, and minerals.
Women artisans have passed down this legacy for generations, keeping the spirit of Mithila alive through their hands and imagination.

Under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative, this traditional art is receiving global recognition. More training, modern design support, and market access are helping artisans secure better livelihoods and bring Madhubani to the world stage.

Let us celebrate and support these skilled artisans who continue to preserve one of India’s most treasured folk art traditions.
Together, we promote a future where heritage meets opportunity.
