Shrimant Sambhaji Chhatrapati’s Visit to Warsaw Rekindles Historic India–Poland Bond
Shrimant Sambhaji Chhatrapati, scion of the Royal Family of Kolhapur and descendant of the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, visited Warsaw along with Shrimati Sanyogeetaraje Chhatrapati from 6 to 9 July 2025. The visit evoked deep historical ties, rooted in the compassionate refuge extended by the Kolhapur State to over 5,000 Polish women and children at the Valivade camp from 1943 to 1948—an enduring symbol of friendship between India and Poland.
The visit commenced with a solemn floral tribute at the Kolhapur Memorial in Zolnierzy Tulaczy, Warsaw. Shrimant Sambhaji then met with H.E. Mr. Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski, Secretary of State in the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where they discussed strengthening bilateral economic ties and progress on the establishment of the Valivade India–Poland Museum.
During the visit, the distinguished guests were warmly received by Prince Jan Lubomirski-Lanckoronski and Princess Helene Lubomirska-Lanckoronska, as well as Dr. Marianna Otmianowska, Director of the Royal Łazienki Museum; Mr. Andrzej Chendynski, President of the Association of Poles in India; and other dignitaries at a dinner hosted by Ambassador Nagma M. Mallick at the Embassy Residence.
In a touching gesture, Prince Jan Lubomirski-Lanckoronski awarded Shrimant Sambhaji the Medal of Independence, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Polish independence, in recognition of his contributions to fostering India–Poland relations. The royal couple later hosted Shrimant Sambhaji and Shrimati Sanyogeetaraje at their residence, Palazzo Murano, on 9th July.
This memorable visit reaffirmed the historical bond and mutual affection between the people of Kolhapur and Poland, which continues to be a cornerstone of the enduring friendship between India and Poland.
