The Indian government’s Ministry of Tourism has named Sualkuchi Village in Assam one of the country’s Best Tourist Villages in the Traditional Crafts category.

Sualkuchi Village in Assam has been chosen by the Indian government’s Ministry of Tourism as one of the country’s Best Tourism Villages in the Traditional Crafts category.

The traditional Assamese clothing, known as gamusa, and mekhela chadors are woven in Sualkuchi Weavers Village. In Sualkuchi, the silk industry employs over 25,000 people directly or indirectly. More than 3.1 million linear meters of silk fabrics, valued at about Rs. 1 billion, are produced in Sualkuchi alone.

The full family’s engagement in the craft is one of the unique aspects of Sualkuchi weaving. The majority of weavers lack formal schooling. Their parents teach them, and they practice frequently.
