WEEK 62 – KANYAKUMARI
Kanyakumari, called Cape Comorin during the British rule of India, is a small coastal town in Tamil Nadu, near the Kerala border. It is the southernmost town in mainland India, the meeting point of the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal and sometimes referred to as ‘The Land’s End’.
It is a popular tourist destination, famous for its unique ocean sunrise, sunset and moonrise, the 41-metre (133ft) Thiruvalluvar Statue and Vivekananda Rock Memorial off the coast, and a pilgrimage centre. Lying at the tip of peninsular India, Kanyakumari is bordered on the west, south and east by the Laccadive Sea with a coastal line of 71.5 km (44.4 mi) stretched on the three sides. On the shores of the town is a temple dedicated to Goddess Kanniya Kumari (the virgin Goddess), after which the town is named. It has been in existence since the Sangam period and has been referred to in old Malayalam literature and in the accounts of Ptolemy and Marco Polo. The town has spiritual significance as the abode of the virgin Goddess Kanniya Kumari, who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, the divine Mother Goddess. It is the place where the goddess is believed to have done penance in order to get Lord Shiva to marry her, and is a popular destination for pilgrims and devotees who come from all over to bathe in the holy saltwater and make an offering at the temple. Apart from this, Kanyakumari is worth a visit for its memorials, palaces, and natural wonders.
